"I would become tender, if I were human," says Ariel, a non-human character in William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, as he addresses Prospero. What does it truly mean to be human? Why do patients often describe the non-technical skills of doctors and care professionals as "human"?
Certainly, humanity in medicine is not limited to emotional sensitivity. Shakespeare’s work alludes to a deeper form of "tenderness"—an internal movement that combines cognitive and emotional dispositions. This integration lies at the heart of human formation, uniting culture as an openness of mind and science as a balance of rigor and imagination. This is the mission the University of Bari and its School of Medicine aim to foster: nurturing a passion for the human—both in others and in oneself—as the foundation of all technical and specialist skills in medicine, and beyond.
